When it came time for another audio challenge with the folks in the Audio Drama Alliance, I knew going in that whatever the prompt ended up being, my project would be an episode of One Day in Aspen Creek. This year has been an insanely busy and challenging one for me, and it has bothered me that I haven't been able to return to this series. A few folks have inquired about it, and I have been itching to get to it as well. In September, I attended a voiceover event in Oklahoma, which was also attended by Rose Beasley, who plays Kate in Aspen Creek. The show came up in conversation a couple of times, and I told Rose then that I planned to write more episodes soon. So here we are! I hope you enjoy "Another Man's Treasure!"
Synopsis:
A visit to Tom's shop from a teacher at Aspen Creek High School helps him and Kate experience more than one example of seeing the value in what others may discard.

Behind the Making of "Another Man's Treasure"
As I mentioned above, I'd been wanting to get back to this show all year, but just had not been able to. But even though I hadn't written, recorded, or released anything, that doesn't mean I haven't been working on it at all. On the contrary, every time I had an idea for an episode, I would add it to a note in my phone's notes app. I have a note specifically for this show where I have continuously dropped thoughts and snippets of dialogue that I can use for episodes.
The catalyst for actually starting on this episode was the Audio Drama Alliance's 30-day audio challenge around the theme of "collection." So when I began outlining "Another Man's Treasure," there were actually parts of three different story idea fragments from my notes that, when coupled with that theme, formed the backbone of this episode.
One of those idea fragments was about a local teacher visiting the shop in search of a particular item. I have long been a fan of stage plays, and though I have participated in numerous church pageants and plays in my life, I would much rather be in the audience. So my love of theater made it an easy choice to have the teacher in the story be a theater teacher. And both of the plays mentioned in this audio drama are ones I have seen and thoroughly enjoyed. The Mouse That Roared was actually one I saw put on by a high school around 25 years ago, and it was such a fun show that it has stuck with me ever since.
Here are a couple of minutes of outtakes from my recording session with Rose:
Random Stats
The full episode, from initial outline to final mix, was created across 8 days. Though it was originally intended to be in the ADA's month-long challenge in October, I was not able to complete it in time. It also ended up exceeding the 5-minute duration limit, even though the script was only 4 and a half pages long. Total time spent on production was about 20 hours and 30 minutes. An additional 3.5 hours were spent on the artwork, writing this post, and putting together the outtake reel.
You can find all of the episodes in this series here.
